Mission, Vision and Goals for 2007-2008

2007-2008 Working Goals Plan for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs

Vision

Each fraternity and sorority will use their espoused values as stated in their missions, creeds, purpose, and rituals and base decisions on these values.

Mission

Fraternity and Sorority Affairs will provide the highest quality and quantity of time to chapters who wish to be better organizations through using their values to base decisions on.

High Priority Items for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs during 2007-2008

These are not the only priorities for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Things come up and people need support and attention. The following ten items will help frame our practice as an office.

  1. Continue to advise governing councils and assist officers in program planning and implementation.
  2. Assist chapters who wish to improve operations in developing plans of action to make such changes.
  3. Address the negative impact of inappropriate t-shirts and other public relations vehicles on the campus community.
  4. Address the incongruence between stated policy and event management, particularly involving events at third party vendors.
  5. Provide education on anti-hazing policies, laws and the lack of congruence between espoused values and hazing practices.
  6. Continue information dissemination through The Illini Greek.
  7. Partner with housing corporations to prepare for Fire Sprinkler Ordinance mandate. Assist chapters in developing plans for sprinkling facilities.
  8. Advance educational efforts on a wide range of important issues including alcohol misuse and abuse, eating disorders, diversity and safety.
  9. Continue to partner to advance the quality and purpose of programs such as Fire Factor, the Annual President's Retreat at Allerton, and other collaborative efforts we are engaged in managing.
  10. Advise students engaged in the facilitation of programs such as Emerging Leaders, Greek Allies and Fire Factor.

Goals and Aspirations

The following were goals and aspirations submitted to Vice Chancellor Riley in this year's annual report.

Goals and aspirations for 2007-08 and connection to A Powerful Purpose — Strategic Opportunities for Student Affairs 2003-08 (pdf)

In relation to A Powerful Purpose — Strategic Opportunities for Student Affairs 2003-08 (pdf)

  1. Strive to anticipate and respond to the changing needs of students while recognizing the increased accountability demands on higher education.
    • We will continue to help chapters recruit a high number of quality members who wish to live out an experience of common values facilitated by an organization of dynamic individuals.
  2. Create a broad-based initiative focused on development of a culture of physical and mental wellness among Illinois students while helping individual students surmount health problems that affect their academic success and personal development.
    • We will continue to provide education and resources through dissemination to governing councils and through The Illini Greek on topics such as alcohol misuse and abuse, disordered eating, mental depression, and other important health related issues.
    • We will seek to partner with campus offices to develop intervention protocol related to disordered eating and alcohol misuse and abuse within housed fraternal units.
  3. Address issues of personal safety and campus security while recognizing the importance of maintaining an open campus environment.
    • Continue to provide educational programs and resources to help address safety issues.
    • Work with Certified Housing to increase awareness of fire safety; explore partnership with Student Affairs Development to aid in funding sprinkler systems.
  4. Create opportunities for students to develop intellectually and personally through face-to-face interactions with staff, faculty and peers while implementing technological advances for efficient and effective service delivery.
    • We continue to do this as we add more resources to our website, but continue to promote "high-touch" experience and request semesterly meetings with chapter leadership. Advising can only be done so much and so well over email.
  5. Foster opportunities for students to have places on campus where they feel comfortable and at home while also facilitating greater interaction, integration and understanding among students across different backgrounds.
    • Fraternities and sororities exist as forums for young men and women to create a connection to others through common values. Sometimes this happens in a housing unit and sometimes through other opportunities. We will continue to promote interaction across organizations and opportunities to partner with cultural houses on programming. We will pilot a diversity initiative involving three sororities on Nevada and the four cultural centers.
    • Continued progress on the Greek Ally program and the United Greek Council will also permit this to happen.
  6. Help students advance their ethical reasoning skills and accept responsibility for their choices and actions while reinforcing the campus's behavioral standards through appropriate disciplinary interventions.
    • We will continue to assist governing councils and the Board of Fraternity Affairs and Board of Sorority Affairs to maintain integrity around self-governance through appropriate investigation into allegations and a thorough and fair judicial process.
    • Connecting organization decision-making to values of their organizations will hopefully help us accomplish this. We will be focusing on beginning conversations with students on what their values are and then will turn our attention to the matter at hand asking them how the behavior does or does not reflect organizational values.
  7. Continue to recruit, train and retain a highly competent and diverse Student Affairs staff, creatively addressing human resource issues.
    • We welcome Ashley Dye, the new Assistant Dean for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. We return this fall with five staff persons. Again, only two of them, one academic professional and a secretary are full time employees. Three others will be staffed with .25 percent responsibilities for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
