1872 Society: Program Overview
Perpetuating the ideals of the fraternity and sorority community at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The 1872 Society is an initiative spearheaded through the generous support of the Adlon Jorgensen Fund. Adlon served the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign as the Panhellenic Advisor and Assistant Dean for Greek Affairs for over a decade. We know this initiative is something should can be proud of!
Background
Since 1872, fraternities and sororities have had an important role in the campus life of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They have provided opportunities to make friendships grounded in common values such as leadership, scholarship, service, social advancement and friendship. In an effort to celebrate the contributions of the fraternity and sorority community, the 1872 Society will be established.
Mission
The 1872 Society will exist to recognize fraternities and sororities and their members who actively live out the ideals of fraternities and sororities every day.
Membership
Any member of a fraternity and sorority at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is eligible for membership. Nominations will be brought forth by chapters. Only members meeting the expectations of membership in their respective fraternity and sorority will be allowed admittance. Each fraternity and sorority will be able to provide a list of 25 percent of their current membership for entrance into the society.
Criteria
The criteria for membership will be as follows for the inaugural year of the society: all chapters with 15 percent of their membership participating in National Volunteer Week (NVW) for a minimum of two hours per person. NVW is April 16-24. Each chapter will coordinate activities taking place during NVW in partnership with the Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP). They will sign up 15 percent of their chapter with service opportunities. At the completion of the activities, chapter presidents will provide simple documentation that their organization met the 15 percent requirement.
All participating organizations will meet with OVP during the week of April 11 to secure their assignments and/or sign up for service opportunities for each participating member.
The criteria will be reviewed to make additions post the 2005 NVW. Additional criteria established should reflect the values of the fraternity and sorority community as articulated in the community statement.
Advisory Board
One representative from the Office of the Dean of Students (preferably a person with responsibilities for the oversight of fraternities and sororities) to be appointed by the Dean of Students; a representative from the Board of Sorority Affairs; a representative from the Board of Fraternity Affairs; two representatives from each governing council (if applicable, it will be the vice-presidents or chairs with responsibilities related to service and scholarship).

- Certificate of participation at the 2005 Greek Excellence Awards
- Letter of commendation to their respective (inter)national headquarters
