Greek Housing: Overview

There are 43 fraternities and 20 sororities that have University Recognized Housing (see Certified Housing). This means that they are in compliance with various guidelines which permit them to house first-year students in compliance with the 30 credit hour live-in requirement of the university. The university recognizes 99 fraternities and sororities. Groups without certified housing may live together in off campus houses or apartments.

Almost all fraternities and sororities only permit members to live in their houses. Selection of membership is conducted each semester by the respective organization.

Each facility is privately owned and operated. Annual life safety and fire code inspections are conducted.

Rates vary by the individual organization, but are comparable to any other living option throughout campus. For a full listing of sororities with facilities, visit www.illiniifc.com and select on any of those links. For a full listing of fraternities with facilities visit www.illiniifc.com. Each organization should have information on their house at their respective web page. During the recruitment process, we advise you to ask questions about the costs of living in the facility. These costs will typically include membership fees, room and board (including meals), and such amenities as internet, cable, water, electricity, and possibly parking.

Maps of fraternity and sorority housing can be received by contacting a representative of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs at 217-333-7062 or adye@uiuc.edu.

You may not know that many of the fraternities and sororities at U of I have houses that are considered national landmarks and have an important historical connection to the campus. These are preserved in many ways. One effort is the Society for the Preservation of Greek Housing (SPGH). Information on SPGH can be found at www.spghfoundation.org.

Each summer the Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Office provides their thoughts on how chapter houses are being maintained. We do this by providing chapters with "Goat Rankings." This means that we offer feedback as to how the yards look. We do this in an effort to help our members keep their yards nice and neat while they are away for the summer. These are offered as friendly feedback and as a fun way to help our students maintain a positive public image. The Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Office has no oversight for fraternity and sorority housing, but we do have a responsibility to help our students understand the positive public relations benefits they receive by maintaining well-kept yards.
