La Casa Cultural Latina Announcements

La Casa Cultural Latina wishes everyone a restful break and happy holiday season.

Calling all juniors and seniors!!! If you would like to help plan next year's La Casa Congratulatory Ceremony, to be held on May 12, 2007, please contact La Casa's director Adele Lozano at salozano@uiuc.edu or 217-333-4950.

Spend your finals week at La Casa. From Sunday, December 10 to Thursday, December 14, La Casa will be hosting its Study Cafe. ON Sunday, the Cafe will open at 12-noon; on the weekdays, the Cafe will begin at 6 pm. You will find several comfortable rooms to study in and coffee and chocolate to keep you going. Many thanks to the student groups who are co-sponsoring the Study cafe, including Omega Delta Phi, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Lambda Theta Phi, and the Puerto Rican, Mexican, and the Colombian student associations, as well as the La Casa student staff. Good luck to everyone on finals.

Campus and Community Announcements

Diversity Conference The University of Wisconsin-Madison will be hosting the 2nd Annual Creating Institutional Change Conference on March 23-25, 2007.  The conference will be composed of sessions and activities focusing on: future initiatives regarding diversity on campuses; developing and encouraging leadership to improve campus climate for underrepresented populations; institutional racism; increasing campus awareness of different cultures and ethnicities; fostering better understanding of racial dynamics, gender behaviors, sexual orientation, and cross-cultural communication; and enhancing college student academic excellence.  The overall theme is to "Increase awareness, encourage leadership, and foster partnerships.”  For more information, please visit the conference website.

Activity Day 2007 - the Spring student organization fair - is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24, 2006, 6-10 pm as an opportunity for RSO's to market their organization's purpose, coordinate outreach efforts, and recruit new members. Beginning Monday, December 4, 2006, applications will be accepted for Activity Day 2007. Submit the completed application to the Illini Union Student Programs and Activities Department, 284 Illini Union - adjacent to the RSO Complex. Applications are available online: http://www.union.uiuc.edu . Contact Natalie Davis, Activity Day 2007 Coordinator, at 333-3660 or mail to: npdavis@uiuc.edu, if you have questions.

Join the Peer Recruitment Program (PRP) as part of the Office of Admissions and Records! If you are interested in helping with the recruitment of underrepresented student populations to our campus, join PRP and participate in the high school visits coming up during Winter Break.  For more information, please email Luis Narváez, Admissions Counselor at the Chicago Satellite Office (narvazgt@uiuc.edu).

The University of Illinois will be hosting information sessions on National Security Education Program (NSEP) undergraduate study abroad scholarships. The campus application deadline is January 18, 2007 for any study between May 2007 and May 2008. The National Security Education Program (NSEP) provides study abroad scholarships of $6,000-$20,000 for a full academic year, $4,000-$10,000 for a semester, or $2,500-$8,000 for a summer session of at least 6 weeks. Scholarships may be used for U.S. citizens to study in Asia, Africa, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East on almost any study abroad program. The Illinois Leadership Center is seeing a large increase in the number of students enrolled in the Leadership Certificate program.  One of the most important requirements of the program is the Leadership Certificate student working with a Leadership Coach.  Due to the increase number of students enrolled in the program, the Leadership Center is in need of additional Leadership Coaches.  For more information about the Leadership Certificate program, contact contact Carol Bosley at cbosley@uiuc.edu. or go to http://www.illinoisleadership.uiuc.edu/leadership_center/leadership_certificate/default.asp

Get Credit for Talking! Train as a peer discussion leader for ACE IT (Alcohol Culture Explored Interactive Theatre) a freshman orientation program that promotes risk reduction rather than abstinence.
