La Casa Cultural Latina Announcements

Latino/a Orientation Tuesday, Sept 4, 2007 from 6-8pm in the Illini Union Ballroom on the second floor. All incoming freshmen are invited to this welcome orientation that includes information on La Casa, Dean of Students and other campus units. Come and find out all about the different organizations that you can become involved in.

Latino Family Visit Day is on Sunday, September 30th from 8:30 - 4pm.. Families of incoming freshmen will be invited for the day to get a glimpse of what campus life is all about. Volunteers are needed for registration/check in, direct and guide families to their sessions, we will also need volunteers to spend time with the younger siblings doing fun activities while their parents are in the sessions. Please email lacasa@uiuc.edu if you are interested in helping out.

La Casa hosts MEET McKinley, the Health Resource Center on Thursdays 2-5pm on the second floor in conference room 211.  Medications and other things that help you stay healthy can be expensive, so take advantage of McKinley’s Health Resource Center.  For more information, check it out on the web: http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/

Resume Critiques at the Corners will start Monday, Sept., 10 in conference room 211 sponsored by The Career Center from 3:00-5:00pm. Does your resume need updating? This is the place to come to!

Salsa Classes for the fall semester will begin at La Casa on Sunday, Sept 9 from 7-9pm. Learn Salsa, Merengue and other Latin dances from Eliana Manero. Classes will be every week on Sundays.

Teach For America for the Fall Information Session  : Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 6:00 pm Gregory Hall 213.  Jack Carey, former New York City corps member, will be on campus to tell you about why he joined Teach For America. During this session, Jack will speak about his experiences in the classroom and provide more information about Teach For America, including our graduate school, employer partnerships, and the application process. Application Deadlines: September 21 and November 2, 2007.

Illini Union Board's Fall Musical Pippin is looking for musicians, dancers, actors, painters, builders, jugglers, sewers and people looking to have a great time! Be a part of the largest student-run theater program on campus. Campus Rec Exercise/Eating Disorder Campaign's
mission is to supply helpful information on topics that range from nutrition topics to "What is your motivation?". They do this by placing posters throughout CRCE in high traffic areas that will grab the students attention. They need your help by joining their focus groups (not a large time commitment) to critique their previous posters and give them fresh, creative, and new ideas for the two new posters they will create this year. Rape Crisis Services, a program of A Woman’s Fund, seeks to hire a part-time Counselor (25 hours per week).  The primary responsibility of the Counselor is to provide individual, group, and family counseling to survivors of sexual violence and their significant others.  This includes the facilitation of support groups for sexual violence survivors. Candidates should have a minimum of a Master’s degree in counseling or a related field, awareness of sexual violence issues, experience working with sexual violence survivors, at least one year of counseling experience, and fluency in Spanish.  Minimum salary of $13.00 per hour with excellent benefits. The US-Mexico Borderlands Seminar ANTH 499/LLS 496 CRN # 48143, 48144, 39307 Tuesday class from 4:00-6:20pm in 245 Everitt Lab with Professor Gilberto Rosas Department of Anthropology and Latina/o Studies Program University of Illinois.  This class explores the contradictory interpretations of the US-Mexico border region: its conceptualization as a site of violence, of immigrant and Mexican American subjection and subjugation, and of environmental degradation, often privileged in the social sciences, versus the often avowedly decolonialist orientations found in the Humanities and Ethnic Studies, and the latter orientations’on transformation.  For more information please email grosas2@uiuc.edu or call (217) 244-4117.

The LIS Access Midwest Program
(LAMP; www.lisaccess.org) seeks a graduate assistant for fall 07 (flexible hours). LAMP is a regional network of academic libraries and information science schools dedicated to promoting careers within the field by targeting promising undergraduate students at its member institutions to participate in activities and events designed to increase their awareness of the profession and to provide support for subsequent graduate studies in LIS.
