- Equal Marriage Illinois Campaign
5:30 pm, Geneva Room of the McKinley Foundation, 809 S. Fifth St.
This is follow-up meeting to the volunteer/campaign training held last week with ACLU organizer, Ali Carter. Locally, CU at the Altar is working with Equal Marriage Illinois (a statewide partnership between the ACLU of Illinois, Lambda Legal and Equality Illinois) to educate citizens about the need for equal marriage (civil marriage) protections for all families in Illinois. And, if the anti-gay referendum does make it on the ballot, we will work to defeat it. Come out and learn how to be involved in ensuring equal marriage for all in Illinois.
Add Your Voice for Domestic Partner Benefits
Earlier today, the News Gazette reported on the recent progress towards ensuring domestic partner benefits for all university employees. This week Governor Blagojevich made an executive decision to allow state agencies to provide domestic partner benefits for same-sex couples. The University has until this Friday, May 12, to opt into the plan by notifying the Central Management Services of Illinois, the state agency which oversees insurance benefits for state employees.
In response to a request for the University to opt in, sent by a member of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on LGBT Concerns, Chancellor Herman wrote, "We have opted in, I believe. I voted for that." However, until there is an official announcement, please contact the Chancellor and President White urging them to opt in.
