- Sexuality and Democracy in a Multiracial Society
7:00 pm, Levis Faculty Center, Third Floor
In contemporary discussions of democracy within a multiracial society, sexuality is often bracketed, or not discussed at all. This panel aims to unpack issues relating to sexuality, race, and democracy by asking such questions as: How do we talk about democracy in a diverse sexual and racial social context? How do issues of class and race relate to queer, gay, gendered, and transgendered identities and issues? What stake do queers of color have in defining democracy when heteronormative discussions of racism predominate? By addressing the interrelationships of sexuality, race, and democracy, a stronger understanding of how democracy is shaped within multiracial contexts is possible. A panel discussion with CL Cole, Martin Manalansan, Richard T. Rodrguez, and Siobhan Somerville. Reception to immediately follow program. - Political Organizing 101
8:00 pm, Room 388 Lincoln Hall
On Wednesday, November 2, 2005, as PRIDEs meeting for the week, PRIDE member and graduate student Kevin Otten will be leading a Political Organizing 101 Workshop at 8:00 pm in 388 Lincoln Hall. Although PRIDE is officially an LGBT/ally student organization, this workshop is designed to teach people how to organize an issue-based campaign in general, so we are extending the invitation to a long list of student and community organizations whose members might be interested in the issues we will be covering during this workshop.
