- MBLGTACC 2008 Planning Committee Meeting
5:00 pm, Office for LGBT Concerns (Room 323, Illini Union)
As some of you may know, the 2006 Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, & Ally College Conference is on its way, and the staff at the Office for LGBT Concerns has expressed an interest in hosting the conference for the year 2008. In order for this conference to be made possible, we would be required to submit a bid to this year's conference committee to be considered. The university has hosted the conference in the past, but we feel it would be a great opportunity to reintroduce such a large venue to our campus. We will be having a meeting on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 5:00 pm in the Office for LGBT Concerns (Room 323, Illini Union). We will be providing food and refreshments for you for attending this meeting. If you are unable to attend this meeting, but would like to be involved in whatever capacity or would like to be kept on the e-mail list, please inform Patrick at your earliest convenience.
Monday, January 23
- Illinois GLBTQSA Collegiate Council Conference Planning Committee Meeting
6:00 pm, Office for LGBT Concerns
Last year, at the MBLGTACC 2005 Illinois Caucus, an Illinois state GLBT organization was founded to facilitate networking and collaboration among student organizations in Illinois. This organization (ILGLBTQSACC) held its founding meeting/mini-conference last December at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. At that meeting, it was decided that the next conference should be right here at UIUC! The conference is tentatively scheduled for the end of April, and if we're going to get ready in time we need to get started. Please email Philip so that he can get a rough count for buying pizza. There will be pizza and drinks available for anyone who attends. (Paid for by the Office for LGBT Concerns) If you can't make it, but are still interested in helping or just being on the email list, please email Philip. Conference information/events will be announced closer to the date of the conference.
Tuesday, January 24
- Rainbow Coffee House
6:30 pm, the Etc., Wesley Foundation (corner of Green and Goodwin)
Offers a welcoming, nonreligious, open environment to LGBT and ALLY communities to socialize. Open every Tuesday. If you or your organization is interested in hosting, contact Sara Clemons for more information. Sponsored by the Office of LGBT Concerns. - Whispering Black: Code Talk for Whites
7:00 pm, Foellinger Auditorium
Author, activist and film producer Molly Secours addresses the hushed tones often used by those classified as white whenever referring to race. She also illustrates how avoiding meaningful racial discussions only furthers the divide between whites and non-whites — thereby maintaining the benefits of white privilege and the injustices of white supremacy. By honestly examining our thoughts, behaviors, and history regarding race, Secours excavates the origins of our biases and deepens our understanding so that we can more consciously change our actions and strengthen our commitment to social justice. Sponsored by the Center on Democracy in a Multiracial Society.
A message from Curt regarding this event: I encourage you to attend this MLK Celebration program even though it takes place at the same time as the Rainbow Coffeehouse. As LGBT people we are raised and exist in the same racist society as our straight brothers and sisters. I believe that because we are oppressed for our LGBT-ness we have an obligation to understand and work to end the oppression of others. (Sorry to sound preachy here.) I hope that many of you will join me there.
Wednesday, January 25
- Dinner and a Movie: Crash
7:00 pm, FAR Multipurpose Room
STUDENT ONLY EVENT. Crash is a film that dives headlong into the diverse melting pot of post-9/11 LA. This compelling urban drama tracks the volatile intersections of a multi-ethnic cast, examining fear and bigotry from multiple perspectives as characters careen in and out of one another's lives. No one is safe in the battle zones of racial strife. And no one is immune to the simmering rage that sparks violence - and changes lives.
