New Student Programs Student Leader (NSPSL)
The New Student Programs office develops and implements a coordinated transitional experience between students, parents and the resources offered at the University of Illinois. The office assists new students and their parents to connect with the University community so they may learn about and effectively utilize the resources and opportunities available in order to achieve success at the University of Illinois.
To achieve these goals, the New Student Programs office employees a staff of students as NSP Student Leaders. NSP Student Leaders are vital to the success of programs held for new students enrolling at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As representatives of the University and the student body, NSP Student Leaders welcome and introduce new students to the culture, history, opportunities and resources of our campus during Summer Registration and Fall Orientation.
Application Process
A completed application is due no later than midnight, Monday, October 20. A completed application includes the online portion in addition to two reference forms to be submitted via email to orient@illinois.edu.
Application Timeline
- Applications Available: Friday, October 3
- Applications Due: Monday, October 20 by midnight
- First round interviews: October 21–30
- Second Interviews: November 4–November 18
- Notification: Friday, November 21
Information Meetings
While not required, interested students should plan to attend an informational meeting. These meetings will provide an overview of the selection process including success tips for the application, reference forms and interviews. Informational meetings will take place on:
- Monday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. in 108 David Kinley Hall
- Tuesday, October 7 at 4:30 p.m. in 115 English Building
- Tuesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. in 305 Materials Science Engineering Building
Qualifications
Recognizing that this position is highly visible on campus and that the primary role of a helping person in an academic community is an educational one, the following considerations are critical in the selection of NSP Student Leaders:
- Attitude that conveys a positive regard towards New Student Programs and the University in general.
- Regard for working cooperatively towards a successful program.
- Ability in communication, leadership, teamwork, creativity and academic achievement.
- Administrative and leadership skills for the completion of details associated with Summer Registration and Fall Orientation.
- Interest in personal growth and enthusiasm for participating in staff training activities.
- Willingness to assume responsibility in the development of an effective educational campus environment.
- Integrity and reputation reflective of a respectful University of Illinois community member.
Additionally candidates must:
- Have at least a 2.25 GPA
- Be a full-time University of Illinois undergraduate student
Responsibilities
The NSP Student Leader's primary mission is to assist incoming students with their academic and co-curricular transition to the University of Illinois. As some of the first people to welcome new students and their guests to the University, NSP Student Leaders are expected to:
- Help with the academic and co-curricular concerns of the students and parents including facilitating the registration (not advising) process for students after they meet with their adviser.
- Build a sense of belonging, support, and affiliation between students and the University of Illinois.
- Be an information resource about the campus, and academic and co-curricular activities, departments and resources.
- Care about people and make the Illinois campus a valuable choice in the eyes of new students and parents.
- Lead groups ranging from 10-200.
Employment Commitment
Employment requires attendance at:
- Spring Semester Training: Tuesdays 3-5 p.m. each week and the Staff Retreat in early 2009 (TBD)
- Intensive Training Week: May 18–22, 2009
- Summer Registration: Weekdays from May 26, 2009, through July 10, 2009, excluding July 3
- August Registration: August 17–20, 2009
- Fall Orientation: August 20–23, 2009
Training
NSP Student Leaders are provided with extensive training throughout the spring semester and summer that helps them become more effective in this position and that provides considerable opportunity for personal growth. The NSP Student Leader’s active participation in training during the semester is a firm requirement and is crucial to the smooth functioning of the New Student Programs office. Other opportunities for growth as a staff member will be provided and participation is encouraged.
NSP Student Leaders are required to attend all training sessions.
- Weekly training sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m. throughout the 2009 spring semester (excluding Spring Break).
- An annual staff retreat will be held one Saturday in early 2009. Date announced by time of hire.
- A week of intensive training will precede the Summer Registration Program sessions.
- A one day training session will precede Fall Orientation.

Students living off campus should discuss housing arrangements with New Student Programs - Pay for Full-Time Staff:
$9.50 per hour before taxes for time worked during spring training
$3800 before taxes for Intensive Training Week, Summer and August Registration Program sessions and Fall Orientation. - Pay for Part-Time Staff:
