Frequently Asked Questions

What tests can I take on the computer?
You can take the GRE General, TOEFL, Praxis and NBPTS.

How do I know what GRE test to take?
You must contact the graduate school or program you want to attend to determine what tests are required.

How do I register for a computer-based test?
If you are paying with a credit/debit card, you can go to the Educational Testing Service website at www.ets.org. If you are paying with check or money order or have a voucher, you need to come to the Testing Center and register in person. You may register between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm Monday-Friday.

How soon in advance do I need to make my appointment?
It depends on the time of the year. From September through February you will need to register several weeks ahead of the time you want to take the test (allowing 2-3 weeks after your test for scores to be sent to graduate schools). Other times of the year are not as busy, and you can make an appointment up to 2 days before your anticipated test date. During the summer you may be able to test on a walk-in basis. But remember, the earlier you register, the more choices you will have for date and time.

How much preparation should I do for my test?
This is your personal decision. Some people prepare for a year, while others do no preparation. There is free practice testing available at www.testprepreview.com. A CD-rom called Powerprep is available for some tests at the ETS website. You may also purchase test review books or go to a commercial test preparation company.

Where is the best place to park while I am taking my test?
The closest parking is University Lot C-7 on the southwest corner of Sixth and John streets. There is public metered parking on the top level (75¢ per hour). Lower levels of the garage have reserved parking from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday-Friday. At other times, anyone may park in any space that does not have a blue sign. Spaces with blue signs are reserved 24 hours a day. Tests usually take 4-5 hours.

If C-7 is not available, you can park in City Lot J, which is located on the northwest corner of Sixth and Healy Streets, two blocks north of the Testing Center. You pay when you exit. This lot is also 75¢ per hour.

What do I need to bring to the Testing Center?
You need to bring your ID with you. The Testing Center supplies you with pencils and scratch paper to use during your test. No other items are permitted in the testing room.

How do I know what ID is required for the test I am taking?
You can check ID requirements on the web site you used to register for the test you are taking (www.ets.org) or you can call the Testing Center at (217)244-1342 or (217) 333-3706.

Is an expired driver's license or passport acceptable ID for testing?
No. Your driver's license or passport must be current and valid.

I received a speeding ticket and my driver's license was confiscated. Is the speeding ticket plus my student ID acceptable identification?
No. You may not substitute a ticket for a driver's license as ID, even with a student ID. We need another government-issued ID, such as a passport or government-issued state ID card. A student ID is insufficient and can not be accepted as identification.

Does the name on my ID have to match the name I used on my test registration?
Yes. The name on your ID must be the same as the name on your registration.

Is there a safe place to put my belongings during my test?
Yes. The Testing Center has individual lockable storage lockers for your belongings. You will leave your locker key with the Testing Center staff during your test. The locker key will be returned after you have completed your test.

Are food and drinks allowed in the Testing Center?
No. There is a water fountain near the restroom.

Will I have a break during my test?
Yes. For most tests the break is optional. During the break you can use the restroom or get a drink of water.

How soon will I know my GRE scores?
You will see unofficial scores for the Verbal and Quantitative sections on your computer at the end of the test if you choose to record your scores. You will receive official scores that include the analytical writing section in the mail in 10-15 business days.

How soon will I know my TOEFL scores?
Your TOEFL IBT, scores cannot be viewed at the Testing Center. They are available on the TOEFL website 15 business days after the test.

How long does it take for my scores to reach the colleges (score recipients) I chose?
Score recipients you have chosen will receive scores in approximately 2-3 weeks.
