Campus Safety Programs

Presentations and materials which promote personal safety are co-sponsored with the UIUC Division of Public Safety. Especially at the start of the academic year and in conjunction with spring break, the Office of Women's Programs will offer personal safety workshops, trainings and events. Additionally, we provide safety assistance through two ongoing programs – Whistle Stop and the Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D.).

Whistle Stop

Whistle Stop distributes safety whistles to all first year, female students through the residence halls. Other students may obtain a whistle at the Office of Women's Programs, the UIUC Police Department or their residence hall.

Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D.)

Rape Aggression Defense System (R.A.D.) is a four sessions, self-defense course for women offered at a nominal fee. The primary sponsor of R.A.D. is the UIUC Police Department. The Illini Union Bookstore, Division of Campus Recreation, Division of Housing and the Office of Women's Programs are frequent co-sponsors.

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training.

R.A.D. is not a martial arts program. Courses are taught by certified R.A.D. instructors and provide you with a workbook/reference manual. The manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth.

The R.A.D. System of physical defense is currently being taught at many colleges and universities. The growing, wide-spread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of the tactics, solid research, legal defensibility and unique teaching methodology.

For more information or to register for a course visit the UIUC Police Department website for R.A.D..
