How Can I Get Involved? Student Organizations and Opportunities
Peer Education Opportunities through the Office of Women's Programs
Students can earn course credit and enhance leadership skills as interns or peer educators. Opportunities include facilitation of CARE workshops, participation in the FPREP program, presentation of workshops on coping with issues which affect women and the campus climate related to women, planning and implementing events related to awareness campaigns. Students also assist at local women's organizations, provide assessment and development of resources, or plan and coordinate special events.
- Campus Acquaintance Rape Education (CARE) – Community Health 199B is a 3-credit hour course that trains students to become CARE facilitators. The course is offered in the fall and spring semesters. For more information, call 333-3137 or e-mail Ross Wantland.
- Fraternity Peer Rape Education Program (FPREP) – GWS 199RW is a two semester (fall and spring), 2-credit hour course that trains fraternity men as peer rape educators to their own chapters as part of the FPREP program. Prospective students should contact Ross Wantland at 333-3137 to set up an interview.
- Gender and Women's Studies 490 (Individual Study) is an opportunity for students to either work in the community with a women's agency/organization to gain practical experience with women's issues or to study more in depth on a particular issue of interest. A Woman's Place
A Woman's Place (AWP) is a local community agency which provides services for individuals who have experienced abuse within a relationship or their household. AWP needs volunteers to assist with medical or legal advocacy, children's and adult groups. For information about the next AWP training, call 384-4462 or visit A Woman's Place.
Rape Crisis Services
Rape Crisis Services (RCS) provides crisis intervention, advocacy and counseling for victims/survivors of sexual abuse and assault. They also provide many educational programs and events to increase awareness and impact the incidence of sexual violence. Volunteers at RCS play a crucial role in the functioning of their crisis hotline, medical advocacy program and awareness/education programs in the school system. Men Against Sexual Violence
Men Against Sexual Violence (MASV) is a campus group dedicated to eliminating all forms of sexual violence. The focus is on educating men to work towards ending sexual violence, but men and women are invited to join. One of the many projects produced by MASV is, MoMENtum, an annual conference on working with to end sexual violence. For more information visit Men Against Sexual Violence.
